I am a 24-year-old Indian lad who was born into a Sikh household. Now, I admit I am not particularly strict, (especially as I eat meat and drink alcohol) but I do follow a lot of the traditions upheld with Sikhism. Not just the pressure of dating, but the pressure to date someone who is the same religion and caste as you.By Tappy Tippy It’s a minefield— when you are dating someone of the same sex.And especially if the sex happens to be the fairer one! You deal with the same issues— shopping, PMS, body-weight issues, gossip and then the sulks, mood swings, tantrums and the joy. Here are my rules to make your way through the Indian lesbian dating scene…Rule No 1: You are hot property but act fast Yes, you are hot property! The exception is when greeting: In Qatar, men and women greet friends of the same sex with three kisses on the cheek. Models in magazines often have clothing drawn on, and any sexy-time scenes in movies are censored, especially if the characters aren’t married. This one is tricky and has caused a lot of debate recently as public consensus becomes more lax. It’s not uncommon for people to call the moral police and dob on anyone seen breaking this rule. However, even though you may see the occasional pair of hot pants, expats are expected to dress modestly in all public areas, even in 40°C temperatures.Garlic, onions and spicy peppers are also avoided as they are believed to incite passion and make spiritual devotion more difficult; mushrooms are avoided as they are said to promote ignorance.Hindus believe that the cow is a sacred animal; therefore, killing or eating its meat is considered a sacrilegious act.
Manu Smriti 5.48 states, “Meat can never be obtained without injury to living creatures, and injury to sentient beings is detrimental to [the attainment of] heavenly bliss; let him therefore shun [the use of] meat.” Other foods and beverages that are avoided by devout Hindus are alcohol and caffeinated coffees and teas, which are said to cloud the mind and make meditation difficult.
Locals especially don’t take very kindly to women flouting the dress code — expect some very unfriendly stares. We’re allowed to purchase booze for private consumption at home, but you need — you guessed it — a letter from your employer giving you permission to get a license first.
As I always say, you don’t make friends with spaghetti straps! If you want to travel outside the country, you first have to arrange for the company you work for — your “sponsor” — to grant you an exit permit, which you must present at customs with your passport. You also need permission from your employer in the form of a letter if you want to buy a car, take out a loan, or rent an apartment. There’s only one store in Qatar that sells alcohol, and once inside you can only spend 10% of your monthly wage.
In Indian culture we do have a hierarchal caste system, which is still prominent to this day, and while it’s true that there are Indian families who adopt a modern view on dating, my family fall into the old school category …which is where, for me, modern dating gets complicated.
As my parents adopt this old school mentality, they want me to find a girl not only in the same religion but also from the same caste.
